What a weekend for Marquette basketball fans, and it all started Friday night at the Al.
Whether it lived up to its yearly hype or not, Marquette Madness once again proved itself a great night for all participating and attending. But as for this year, no one seemed to have a better time than the recruits:
And, of course…
Because so many were in attendance – sixteen confirmed visits, to be exact – this was expected to be the most crucial trip of the year for all involved. And we’re not talking just any recruits – this was about Charles Matthews, Diamond Stone, the above-mentioned Ahmed Hill and Marial Shayok… you get the idea. The ’14 and ’15 recruiting classes are really the first classes in Buzz Williams’ tenure at MU where top players are seriously considering his program, so Buzz knows it’s absolutely crucial to execute on this heightened interest. And so far, I’d say he’s more than getting the job done. As you may have implied from above, MU Madness was the factor that turned Hill’s lean towards Marquette into a verbal commitment the next day.
“I have a great relationship with coach Buzz and coach Isaac Chew,” said Hill, Georgia’s Boys Basketball Player of the Year. “I just needed to come and check everything out.”
Hill was formally choosing between Marquette, Missouri and Indiana, but as noted in our previous recruiting article, the battle really came down to Marquette and Mizzou. According to Paint Touches, Hill had previously decided on Marquette after an impressive in-home visit from Buzz in September, but wanted to wait until he paid a visit to Marquette Madness to solidify his interest. Hill’s commitment adds to a promising 2014 recruiting class, which currently holds a trio of 4-star recruits in Sandy Cohen, Malek Harris and Hill. For more on Hill as a player (and other recruits), read our ’14 recruiting primer from last month – we’ll also have another article coming soon on Hill. But for now, let’s get to the event we’re here to talk about.
